Sited on a double-lot containing a carefully restored historic home in Flagstaff’s North End Historic District, the Owners of the parcel set out to design a barrier-free guest house and garage to allow them to age-in-place.  Through careful coordination with the City of Flagstaff, the design team developed a plan which replaces a non-historic accessory structure with a new guest house. 

Sensitively recessed behind the primary historic home, the new, zinc-clad structure is universally designed to allow barrier free circulation between garage, living, kitchen, bedroom and exterior spaces.  A loft provides flexible guest accommodations under a single, expressive roof gesture conversant with the geometry from the gables of the historic home.  Full height glazing oriented toward a lush garden is accentuated while strategic punched openings frame views of the sky, tree canopy, and distant San Francisco Peaks.
